finding the rockFor the first part of this project I had to find a rock that I would be interested in shaping and working with for the rest of the project. Right away I knew that I would like to work with a harder rock so I could have more flexibility and so it wouldn't grind away so fast on the rougher pads. Looking through the buckets of rocks in andrew's class I found A rock that felt very solid and that I knew would look nice polished and in the final form. The rock I picked was called red jasper. This rock has the chemical formula of this rock is SIO2 and has a hardness of 6.7. It was the perfect rock and I began to cut it down right away. cutting the rock down to sizeWhen I first got my rock It was in a shape that couldn't be worked with . I had to use a tile saw To cut it into a basic shape that would be easy to work with and won't be difficult for the pads to grind. The tile saw was a piece of equipment that I've never used but I picked it up fast and was able to cut my rock into an even square that was ready to grind. grinding and shaping the rockAfter the rock was in a shape that would be easy to grind I started the the roughest grid on the grinding pads and started experimenting with shapes I could possibly make my rock into. I first flattened out each of the bottom and top front parts the I rounded out the edges and I thought it look nice. Once I had the rock rounded and smooth I thought I could challenge myself a lot more and create a shape that had more character and quality. final shaping and polishingThe final steps in this rock project were to get the final shape and start going through smaller grits of sanders to create a better more polished finishing look. My rock was kind of difficult to polish and sand because it had many carefully placed facets that were easy to mess up and I often did and had to take steps back. I carefully went through each step and was very careful and patient with my rock so the final product could turn out the way it did. reflectionLooking back: My project turned out very well, I really challenged myself and took on something I have never done before. I created a beautiful piece of jewelry and had lots of patience even when things took a wrong turn. Looking inward: I got desirable results and the reason why is that I took lots of time and went backwards in the process when I needed to so I can get the results I imagined. I think I performed well and efficient in this project and had results with a lot more quality than others. looking froward: If I could do this project again I would try and make multiple pieces and challenge myself more by using rocks That are harder or softer. take aways: Something I took away from this was a completely new skill in making jewelry and faceting stones To make them look like a high quality piece. |
