This lab involved smelling different things and trying to give them a name and a place of where we remembered smelling it. Two things I took from this lab Is that things can smell similar because of their molecular structure. Things with the similar molecular structures are detected by the receptors in the nose and let us know that they are similar, if they had different structures they would be detected by the receptors differently from each other and we would know they are two different things. We noticed this because the lemon, orange and grapefruit had a similar scent and that could be set apart from things like oregano and had similar molecular structures.
The other thing I took from this lab is that scent is connected to memory. The way we are able to recognize scents is because we memorize them from past interactions were that scent came along. Memorizing these scents lets you recognize what it is in the future and without that every scent will always be new to us. I saw this play a large role in today's project because I remembered most scent from past interactions.
